Then\, experience the soulful sounds of Porumbescu’s masterpiece\, Ballad for Violin and Piano. The evening concludes with the adventerous sounds of Brahms’s Piano Quintet in f minor\, Op. 34. \n\nThings were turned upside down. There were terrifying things in the air. … They found their way into “Black Angels.”\nThe work portrays a voyage of the soul. The three stages of this voyage are Departure (fall from grace)\, Absence (spiritual annihilation)\, and Return (redemption). \nThe numerological symbolism of “Black Angels\,” while perhaps not immediately perceptible to the ear\, is nonetheless quite faithfully reflected in the musical structure. These ‘magical’ relationships are variously expressed\, e.g.\, in terms of length\, groupings of single tones\, durations\, patterns of repetition\, etc. … There are several allusions to tonal music: a quotation from Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden: quartet\, an original ‘Sarabanda\,’ the sustained B-major tonality of ‘God-music\,’ and several references to the Latin sequence ‘Dies irae’ (Day of Wrath). The work abounds in conventional musical symbolisms such as the ‘Diabolus in musica’ (the interval of the tritone) and the ‘Trillo del diavolo’ (the Devil’s Trill\, after Tartini). \n—George Crumb \n\n[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][vc_column_text] \nArtists\nMarian Tănău\, violin\nSheryl Hwangbo\, violin\nHeidi Han\, violin\nWill Haapaniemi\, viola\nDavid LeDoux\, cello\nRobert Conway\, piano[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”5/6″][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n\nConcert Program\nGeorge Crumb (b. 1929)\n“Black Angels” String Quartet (1970)\nI. Both Horia Pătraşcu’s novel and the screenplay (co-authored by Pătraşcu and Pintilie) are closely based on real-life events. The incident was witnessed by Pătraşcu during the early 1960s\, and took place in his native town of Caransebeş\, shortly before a celebration of August 23 (Communist Romania’s national holiday\, commemorating the 1944 coup). The militiamen involved had detained two youths with no prior criminal record\, accusing them of having been drunk and disorderly\, and had decided to make them reenact the scene in order to educate the public about the perils of alcohol. In a 1999 interview\, Pătraşcu acknowledges that\, as a university student and part-time activist at a local culture house\, he was a member of the original crew.
